Did you ever wonder what the origins of Halloween are? Where
did the Halloween really come from? You probably never even imagined that
Halloween is linked with ancient tribe that inhabited the areas of Western and Central Europe known as the Celts.
Halloween is actually on of their rituals, preformed by
druids, who were something like spiritual leaders and since we know that Celts
were a pagan nation, Druids were usually the ones conducting these rituals.
Halloween, or in Celtic culture known as Samhain was celebrated in the autumn,
it began at sundown on October 31 and extended long into the night until the
following day.
Many believe that Samhain was actually the God of Dead, but
this is not true. The correct translation would be the God of Sun. Samhain
marked the end of one year and the beginning of the next. It marked the harvest
season for the Celts and the end of the season. According to the Druid culture,
this is the day when dead come to earth to haunt the living. This is linked to
many customs that exist to this very day. They use to make a big fire, usually
on the hilltops and offer sacrifice to protect the living. When Romans invaded
these areas they took some of these traditions and incorporated them in their
own, but there were still some nations not conquered by the Romans that were
able to proceed with these rituals in full. Irish were one of them.
But you are surely wondering how this could be true because
we all know that Irish are Catholics and Samhain is a pagan ritual. What
happened is when Irish nation embraced the new fate they were allowed to keep
some of their old tradition. So the church, or to be more exact Pope Gregory IV in order to win them over, called
this holiday Halloween or in its original title All-Hallow-Eve, or All Saints’
Day.
That is the night when we pay our respect to the saints. So
how did it come to North America? Simple, it
was carried alongside with many other traditions by the Irish nation, when they
inhabited America.
And that is where the Halloween Come from.Even though it is celebrated throughout the Western country as a scary holiday
the origin of Halloween is totally different.
